Background

The establishment of the Kigali Mental Health Referral Centre by the Ministry of Health in Rwanda, aimed at providing comprehensive mental services in Kigali and beyond. It addresses the significant mental health challenges faced by the Rwandan population, particularly stemming from historical trauma related to the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and ongoing issues such as domestic violence and chronic diseases.

To ensure availability and accessibility of quality mental care through innovative, rehabilitation, and capacity building

Vision: 

To be a leading provider of-quality mental health services, a research hub, and a training center for healthcare providers.

Key Issues:

  • A high prevalence mental disorders exists in Rwanda, with urban showing even higher rates.
  • Existing facilities are overwhelmed; for instance, there is only specialized inpatient unit for children with limited capacity.

Objectives: 

  1. Strengthen mental health system accessibility.
  2. Provide day and short-stay hospitalization options.
  3. Offer specialized outpatient services focused on families.
  4. Provide medication-assisted therapy for substance abuse patients5. Train skilled healthcare providers while promoting.
